Commandos

Isla & the Commandos

I’ve volunteered to help  a Commando fund raising project with my Uncle Sandy in mind. He was a member of Army Commando no 3 HQ who volunteered from his tank regiment (13/18th Hussars) after surviving Dunkirk. Sandy fought in many raids including Lofoten, Sicily and Dieppe only to be killed on D Day and buried in Hermanville.

My uncle , Alexander Innes Sinclair, is listed on the Buckie War Memorial along with his brother Sergeant John Sinclair who was killed accidentally while training his unit in the Home Guard. As a point of interest he was so liked and respected that he was given the first open cortège in Buckie with an extraordinary turn out.

Scott Sutherland’s memory and extraordinary talent (evident for all to see through his creation of the breathtaking Commando Memorial at Spean Bridge) is being re-invigorated with the Commando Heritage Trail and the restoration of his Leaping Salmon Statue which on completion will be placed overlooking the training area to commemorate the young men who lost their lives while in training there.
